A four-speed automatic transmission with an overdrive in the fourth gear is known as an AOD (automatic overdrive). This was Ford's initial four-speed automatic overdrive transmission, and it debuted in 1980. The gearset is based on the automatic Ford "X" transmissions from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.
Ford created the AOD transmission in 1962 to highlight durability and fuel efficiency. The AOD was constructed with the fourth gear as an essential element of the gearset, unlike many gearboxes of the time that had it fitted as a rudimentary afterthought with just a little use. It comes in light-rebuilt, heavy-duty, and supersport versions. How Reliable Is AOD? When employed on factory automobiles, the AOD transmission is utterly reliable. However, if a driver chooses to increase the engine's power, the transmission may eventually break out, especially after 450 horsepower. The increased powerplant's significantly stronger forces were too much for the internals to handle. The Ford AOD has a few flaws besides a cumbersome overdrive mechanism that breaks too frequently. There aren't any extra clutches or steels in the third gear. Under excessive power, its input shaft breaks. The shift pattern is complex because shifting into second gear takes some, ahem, getting accustomed to it. Shifting into gear under full speed can destroy the clutch pack, and anyone hoping to get some real power out of their vehicle will find the factory cooler far from ideal.
